A Vermont company has found another Broome County site for a distribution

A Vermont company has found another Broome County site for a distribution facility that had been planned for the old Kmart building in Endicott.

The Broome County Industrial Development Agency is expected to discuss Green Mountain Electric Supply's application to acquire an empty industrial complex in Kirkwood.

The agenda for next week's agency meeting indicates the company is interested obtaining the Pine Camp Drive property that had been purchased by Canopy Growth in May 2019. The Canadian-based Canopy Growth had planned to use the site for hemp and cannabis products.

Canopy Growth scrapped the Kirkwood project despite spending a significant amount of money to modernize the complex. Company officials could not be reached for comment on the project which some supporters said could create 400 jobs.

The Industrial Development Agency is planning to review Green Mountain Electric Supply's proposal to buy the dormant Kirkwood site and the company's request for tax breaks. The agenda for the next Wednesday's meeting indicates a public hearing will be scheduled on the project.

Green Mountain acquired the Endicott Plaza property less than three months ago for $1 million. The company soon learned the old Kmart building would need costly foundation work that made the project unviable at that site.

In a statement, Green Mountain said it was hopeful the property could be developed in the future.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar last week said the abandoned department store should be demolished. He said he hoped that could happen by the end of the year.
