Former Hawkeye Luka Garza Gets To Follow His Olympic Dream
Former Iowa basketball great Luka Garza isn't sure what his NBA future will
Former Iowa basketball great Luka Garza isn't sure what his NBA future will hold. The former Minnesota Timberwolves center is officially a free agent. But Garza did get news on another important team that he'll be playing for in the 2024 Olympic games.
Fansided reports that Garza and his camp have been busy filling out paperwork that will allow him to participate in the 2024 Olympic games. Yesterday, Garza got word that all the hard work has paid off. Garza will be an Olympian!
If you're a little confused as to why Luka will be suiting up for Bosnia Herzegovina, don't feel too bad. I wasn't aware that he was eligible to play for Bosnia either. But, as Fansided points out, Garza's mother, Sejla Garza, is of Bosnian descent. In fact, she is currently employed as an administrative assistant at the Bosnian embassy in Washington D.C. Fansided reports that Garza has been working on the process of representing his mother's country since 2020. Luka responded to the news by saying,
It is an honor for me and my family to represent the country where my mother was born. It's a a childhood dream. I can't wait to share the court with my Bosnian teammates, I will give everything for the coach and the NT.
While Garza knows what country he'll be playing for during the 2024 Olympics, he isn't quite as certain of his NBA future. He played under a two-way contract for the Timberwolves last season. Fansided reports that there is a chance the team may extend that contract next NBA season.
